Space Pirates MkIII by Del-Borovic Space Pirates MkIII by Del-Borovic
Commission for :iconkemonoart: of his merry band of space pirate terrorists :D

This is the third picture so far of this dynamic trio~ Spent a while on this one.. and I always like painting these guys, because there's always enough time between them that I think I improve every time I paint them. So this is the best I think so far! I've only posted this other one: [link]

Also, for your amusement, here's a gif of the entire piece's progress in steps: [link]
Enjoy!

I watched the gif and couldn't believe the fact that took so many layers. Every time I thought the next one was sure to be the finished piece, there was more--more lineart, more detail, more highlights. Very easy to see why your commission prices are more than reasonable. Now how long did it take? XD The level of detail you put into the hair is always so exquisite.

I notice you seem to be upping the black fields and contrast in your pieces as of late. (It's not all that recent now, I suppose, but still noticeable.)</random friendly observation>

Hahahaha, yeah, honestly I was surprised too, looking back on it. Like "OOohh. I totally forgot that's how it looked when I started..." but yeah, these things take a while! This piece in particular I worked on for 4 days straight- not really working on any other pieces.. and I'd say it probably took around 30 hours most likely. I don't really sit and count hours but, I usually am working on art 8-12 hours a day, unless I take the day off. Hehe, but thank you! Also because I raised my prices like I did, it gives me the ability to work on the pieces even longer and put more work into them- since, unlike before, I'm not losing money by working on them for a few hours extra.

And yep.. I think I've just been getting more gutsy with the contrast and lighting in my pieces! I've always loved very dramatic lighting, I think I'm just a little less scared of it now ;3 Though I do have to watch for making pictures TOO dark. I'm sure on some people's monitors they might black out in some places entirely.. hmm~

Swweeeeeeet!!

I _love_ this! It's awesome, Del, and it's definitely worth the fave!

(Then again, I'm always game for kick-@$$ space opera stuff....)

Only downside is that I have to go back and work on my painting skills....8-)

Excellent work.

Hmmm...wouldn't mind trying that!

BTW, speaking of space opera, have you ever heard of Frank Kelly Freas? He passed away a few years ago, but he was the BEST artist when it came to space opera. Anytime I think of depicting space opera stuff I look to his work (or Darrell K. Sweet, another favorite).

He was quite the dude. He did a lot of SF novel covers for years, and even worked with MAD magazine. He also designed the mission patch for one of the Skylab crews back in the 1970s.

Oh, almost forgot--he painted the cover for the Queen album "News of the World", which was based on one of his illustrations.

The best book for his art is "Frank Kelly Freas: As He Sees It".

Another great artist is (or rather, was, sadly) Peter Elson, an incredible British artist very popular in the late 1960s through the 1970s. This guy could paint incredible ships and SF materials...he died some years back, mostly forgotten, but he has his fans--I'm one of 'em--and he deserves a look.

Cool.

And the gif shows that art is actually a lot of hard work and good artists don't just miraculously manage to produce great pictures out of the blue.

Well, maybe there are people like that out there, but I guess they're the minority.

Hahaha, I totally agree. Those minorities we need to hate. But yeah- art really does take a lot of work and a lot of time for me... I just seem to do it fast, because I work constantly. xD

Aww, thanks Eldanis!! :D Hahaha it's a lot of fun to make those after I finish putting together a picture xD makes me realize how much time it takes, since I tend to forget while I'm doing it.. awww! But yeah I did a basic rundown tutorial of how I paint a while ago.. it's.... here: [link] :3 But I've been thinking of doing some specific tutorials on Livestream.. or maybe even some paintovers of other people's stuff, or something? Hmmm~ but I'm glad you like! xDD NO WORSHIPPING!
